This project included restoration and reconstruction of eight structures at Pigeon Key, the railroad worker’s camp used for construction of the Overseas Highway.  The island represents several  significant eras in the history of the Florida Keys:  Construction of “the railroad that went to sea”, the 1935 Labor Day storm that destroyed the railroad and took 400 lives; and construction of the overseas highway.        

                

Pigeon Key is a unique opportunity not only because of its historic importance, ambiance and feeling of being “frozen in time”, but also because of its relative isolation from public utilities.
